David returns to the first principal’s chair

The installation meeting of Ribble Chapter No 4558 saw David Asbridge vacate the third principal’s chair to return to the chair of the first principal. Terry Turley, obviously enjoying his position as the second principal, remained in office for a second term whilst Simon Wright assumed the role of third principal at the start of his journey through the respective chairs.

The chapter was honoured with the presence of the Second Provincial Grand Principal Barry Jameson who was accompanied by Assistants to the Provincial Grand Principals, Mike Threlfall and Tony Hall, the Preston Group Vice Chairman Geoff Saul, grand officer, Ian Greenwood, Provincial Deputy Grand Director of Ceremonies David Thomas and Provincial Grand Steward Jim Hardman.

The chapter was opened by the three principals and the administrative business smoothly dealt with. Chapter DC John Rimmer and ADC Peter Aikman requested permission to retire to form part of the principal guests’ escort before the Provincial Deputy DC, David Thomas, entered the chapter to announce the presence of the Second Provincial Grand Principal Barry Jameson. He entered in due form, accompanied by acting Provincial rank and grand rank officers to be welcomed by the first principal, Terry Ward.

The visitors were then treated to a ceremony of the highest order that commenced with John Rimmer presenting Simon Wright to David Asbridge for installation as the third principal. As Simon had not held the office before, the ceremony was carried out in full.

After answering the usual questions, Simon recited his obligation to carry out the duties of a third principal in the required manner. The scripture reading was given by Kevin Dowley and the prayer by Tony Ormiston.

Terry Turley, remaining in the position of the second principal, was formally questioned by John Rimmer as to his willingness to remain in office for a second consecutive year. Having confirmed his decision, Terry duly reaffirmed his obligation regarding the duties of his office.  The relevant scripture reading was given by Mike Cowsley and the prayer by Peter Maddison.

Before assuming the role of Installing first principal, Terry Ward rose to thank his officers and the companions of the chapter for all their support and assistance during his year in office.

David Asbridge was then presented to him for installation as first principal of the chapter by John Rimmer. After answering the usual questions and having held the office on a previous occasion, David reaffirmed his obligation as to his duties as first principal. On this occasion, the relevant scripture reading was given by John Rimmer and the associated prayer by Derek Thompson.

Companions below the rank of an installed first principal were requested to retire from the chapter for a short time. Conclaves of installed principals were declared during which David Asbridge, Terry Turley and Simon Wright were installed in their respective chairs.

The companions were readmitted to hear John Rimmer declare the three principals as now holding their respective offices.

The scarlet and purple robe addresses were delivered in a faultless manner by Mike Cowsley and David Asbridge respectively.  The blue robe address was delivered in a similar manner by Simon Wright, with the address adjusted to take account of the fact that he was the wearer of the blue robe. This departure from the usual ritual was delivered seamlessly and proved to be a very successful process that worked well.

Continuing the high standard of ritual, the address to the three principals was commendably delivered by Derek Thompson.

At the conclusion of the installation ceremony Barry rose to bring the greetings and congratulations from the Grand Superintendent Tony Harrison, wishing the three principals an enjoyable year in their respective offices. He congratulated the chapter on the overall excellence of the ceremony he had just witnessed. He particularly mentioned the work of Terry Ward as the installing first principal and John Rimmer in his role as the chapter DC.

David responded, thanking Barry for his kind words on behalf of the Grand Superintendent and, had the pleasure of presenting him with a summary of the chapter donations to charity over the past twelve months and a further donation of £150 in support of the MCF 2021 Festival.

On behalf of the Grand Superintendent, Barry thanked the chapter for the generous donations recognising that all the members would be already making charity donations through their respective Craft lodges.

The chapter workings closed with Terry Turley maintaining the high standard of ceremony with his delivery of the valedictory charge.

Later in the evening, a raffle was held that raised a further £104 for the MCF 2021 Festival.
