Winner – John Medcalf receives the Presidents Prize from President Stan Rigby

This popular annual outdoor event again took place at the Broughton & District Club. The weather was not quite as good as in previous years, but after a somewhat damp, cool and cloudy start, the sun eventually came out to enhance an enjoyable and successful day.

The competitors enjoyed a delightful and friendly days bowling on a green in excellent condition but, due to recent rain, running slightly slower than usual.

Howard Linaker and his wife Susan again kindly agreed to coordinate and control the smooth running of the competition, that consisted of the usual four mini leagues, with the four individual winners qualifying for the semi-final. It is pleasing to report that a considerable number of guests, spectators and Group Officers were in attendance, that all helped to add to a happy and convivial atmosphere.

The semi-finalists were Peter Donnelly, Brian Rigby, Cliff Bell, and our loyal Ormskirk Group guest player – John Medcalf, who, after a long and gruelling 15–14 semi-final against the skilful Brian Rigby, joined Cliff Bell in the final.

An extremely keen and hard-fought contest then ensued between Cliff and John, with John finally coming out on top in an extremely tight match to claim a deserved victory. He was then presented with The Presidents Prize, a beautifully engraved clock, by our President Stan Rigby, while Cliff received the Chairman’s Prize, an attractive ornate lantern, from Chairman John Watson. Cliff was also rightfully able to hold the silver Group Trophy for the next 12 months, by being the highest placed member of Preston Group.

A substantial raffle was held on the day, thanks to all who provided raffle prizes, and to the ladies who helped to run the event by selling tickets etc. The raffle made the magnificent sum of £133 that will be added to other monies collected on the day and forwarded to the West Lancashire Bowling Charity.

The Group is also grateful to the club for providing the usual bar facilities, along with delicious hot meat and potato pies, cakes, and sandwiches, along with limitless cups of tea.

Subject to availability, the Semi Finalists now qualify by right to play in the West Lancashire Tournament which takes place on Saturday 20th July commencing at 10:00 am at the Fox Lane Sports and Social Club, Leyland PR25 1HB.
